Mercedes-Benz’s F015 Looks Like An Alien Spaceship
Cars are a big part of the CES experience, and this year there’s a bigger push than ever. Mercedes-Benz on Monday unveiled an amazing new concept, the F015, which is an electric/hydrogen hybrid of the autonomous variety—and it looks cool as hell. I think I saw something like this in the awful Total Recall reboot.
During the concept’s unveil, Daimler AG chairman, Dieter Zetsche, described that car as a “mobile living space.”
“Anyone who focuses solely on the technology has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society,” Zetsche explained.
Instead of something that merely gets you from Point A to Point B, Zetsche said the F015 is meant to be “exclusive cocoons on wheels,” something that’s more of a mobile living space than simple transportation. And it looks pretty stinking cool. The windshield essentially extends halfway of the length of the car and into the sunroof. It’s more of a silver bullet than something you’d see cruising around the city.
Inside, passengers will sit in pedestal-style seats that will automatically rotate 30-degrees when the doors open. There’s also six high-resolution touchscreen display panels, which passengers can easily interact with to stay connected to the outside world. That sounds like a terrible distraction, but Mercedes says these screens can be controlled with gestures, eye movements and touch.
Automakers are just beginning to scratch the surface of what’s possible for tech inside your future car. There’s a lot of emphasis on the “Internet of Things,” and a lot of exciting possibilities. We like the approach by Mercedes of turning cars into mobile living/work spaces. And why not do it in style?
